This outwardly harsh and inhospitable region has a unique folk architecture, numerous historical monuments and natural beauties. The symbol of\u00a0<i>Zamagurie\u00a0<\/i>are the <i><strong>Pieniny Mts<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/i>Its steep rocks are washed by the <strong><i>Dunajec <\/i>river<\/strong>, which drains water into the <strong><i>Baltic Sea<\/i><\/strong>. Initially the Greek and Roman merchants sailed to the Baltic for the amber; iron, wood, antimony, prunes, cheese, mead or medicinal herbs were transported on the barges later. Polish sources date the transport of goods and people on the Dunajec river since 13th<span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span>century, the oldest record from Slovakia is the latin text from 1708. Further development of the goods transport on wooden barges stopped in 1813 because of the great floods, which finaly resulted in the cessation of this traditional kind of goods and people transport in 1923.<br \/>A living memory of wood and goods transport along the Dunajec river to the Baltic Sea, and the traditional symbol of the men steering barges, is the <strong>black hat decorated with sea shells<\/strong> \u2013 one shell for each cruise :-).<\/p>\n<p>Even today, the <em>Dunajec\u00a0<\/em>offers a unique way to experience beautiful natural scenery of the <a href=\"http:\/\/slovakia.travel\/en\/national-park-of-pieniny\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Pieniny\u00a0<\/em>National Park<\/strong><\/a>. During our trip you can enjoy spectacular and safe cruise on wooden barges steered by experienced &#8220;sailors&#8221; :-). 9 km long journey takes about 70 to 90 minutes.<br \/>The adventure begins in the village <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/\u010cerven\u00fd_Kl\u00e1\u0161tor_(monastery)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>\u010cerven\u00fd Kl\u00e1\u0161tor<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and leads through the Dunajec chasm to the state border with Poland near the village <strong><em>Lesnica<\/em><\/strong>. Before entering the canyon you will be welcomed by the dominant and symbol of <em>Pieniny\u00a0<\/em>&#8211; the majestic <strong><em>Tri koruny\u00a0<\/em>(Three Crowns)<\/strong>, from which, according to legend, a <strong>monk Cyprian<\/strong> took-off with wings constructed by himself in 18th<span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span>century. Then you will go through a canyon with high rock walls and places with many legends &#8211; you pass the entrance gate guarded by steep slope <em>Ostr\u00e1\u00a0<\/em>(Sharp), only 10 meters wide tightest point <em>J\u00e1no\u0161\u00edkov skok<\/em>, <em>Bar\u0161tyk\u00a0<\/em>where you can see limestone dissolving into foam (<em>pena\u00a0<\/em>in Slovak), which gave the name to the national park, hill <em>Holica<\/em>, which encompasses 7 bedrocks (according to the legend they are monks, which were petrified by the gods for taking a forbidden plant), and even more.<\/p>\n<p>After the cruise we can optionally visit the architectural pearl &#8211; a <a href=\"http:\/\/slovakia.travel\/en\/monastery-cerveny-klastor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Carthusian monastery<\/strong><\/a> from 14th<span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span>century in the village of <em>\u010cerven\u00fd Kl\u00e1\u0161tor<\/em>, which was inhabited by <strong>Camaldolese monks<\/strong> in 18th<span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span>century. You will be rewarded with a view of the breathtaking scenery of the Tatra <strong>peaks<\/strong>, <strong>valleys<\/strong> and glacier remains &#8211; pearls of the Tatras &#8211; <strong>alpine lakes<\/strong>, called &#8220;<em>ples\u00e1<\/em>&#8220;. A <strong>funicular<\/strong> takes you to the tourist point <strong><em>Hrebienok<\/em><\/strong>, and then you continue by foot through the 7 km long valley called <em><strong>Ve\u013ek\u00e1 Studen\u00e1 dolina<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;Great Cold Valley&#8221;). It is one of the largest and the most visited valleys on the southern slope of the mountains, with the highest number of alpine lakes (22) out of all Tatra valleys.<\/p>\n<p>During the trip to the <strong><em>Zbojn\u00edcka chata\u00a0<\/em>chalet<\/strong> you will also enjoy views on the mountain peaks surrounding the valley, which give it a distinctive character &#8211; the <em>Prostredn\u00fd hrebe\u0148<\/em>, which separates it from the neighbouring <em>Mal\u00e1 Studen\u00e1 dolina\u00a0<\/em>valley (&#8220;Little Cold Valley&#8221;), <em>Javorov\u00fd \u0161t\u00edt\u00a0<\/em>ridge, <em>Bradavice\u00a0<\/em>ridge, or <em>Slavkovsk\u00fd \u0161t\u00edt\u00a0<\/em>massif. <em><strong>Ve\u013ek\u00fd Studen\u00fd potok<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;The Great Cold Creek&#8221;) flows through the valley, with the <strong>waterfall <\/strong><em><strong>Vodop\u00e1dy Studen\u00e9ho potoka<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(&#8220;the Cold Creek Falls&#8221;) at the very beginning of the hike, near <em>Rainerova chata\u00a0<\/em>chalet. After climbing above the dwarf pine line you can see the first alpine ponds: <em><strong>Vare\u0161kov\u00e9 pleso<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>and <strong><em>Dlh\u00e9 pleso<\/em><\/strong>. When you overcome the last, but also the steepest section, you will finally be able to refresh and relax &#8211; you have reached the chalet :-). At nearby <strong><em>Sestersk\u00e9 pleso\u00a0<\/em>lake<\/strong> (1974 m asl) you will learn something about the long-term limnological research of the Tatra lakes and maybe the <strong>Tatra chamois<\/strong> (<em>Rupicapra rupicapra tatrica<\/em>) will honor you with their visit.<\/p>\n<p>If still not satisfied, you can optionally go further along the path to the mountain saddle <em>Prielom\u00a0<\/em>to <em><strong>Zbojn\u00edcke ples\u00e1<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>lakes or the opposite side leading to <em>Prie\u010dne sedlo\u00a0<\/em>saddle to <em><strong>Starolesnianske pleso<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>and <em><strong>Siv\u00e9 ples\u00e1<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>lakes (2013 m asl). However, even before that the castle hill had been a\u00a0<strong>cultural centre<\/strong> on major European trade routes. The place was inhabited at least <strong>since the Stone Age<\/strong> and a <strong>massive fortress<\/strong> was present there from years before Christ until the castle was built. Mounds of the ancient fortress are still recognizable and they even surpassed the area of the medieval castle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"SK\">The castle <\/span><span>proved as a strong defense at the northern border of <strong>Old Hungarian state<\/strong>: only a few castles withstood the Mongolian raids in 1241 and Spi<\/span><span lang=\"SK\">\u0161 was among them. The castle housed administration of the region, craftsmen, armory, mill and it witnessed several fights, sieges, rebellion against the king and it is a birthplace of <em>Szapolyai J\u00e1nos (John Z\u00e1polya)<\/em>, the <strong>Hungarian king<\/strong> from 16th<span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span>century.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"SK\">Other <strong>aristocratic families<\/strong> kept and improved the castle throughout centuries, such as<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Habsburg<\/em>, <em>Thurzo<\/em> and <em>Cs\u00e1ky<\/em>. Thus a <strong><span>palace<\/span><\/strong>, a <strong><span>knight hall<\/span><\/strong>, gothic\u00a0<b><\/b><strong><span>chapel of St Elisabeth<\/span><\/strong>, several layers of fortifications, towers, ditches and gates (one with draw-bridge and portcullis) were added to the central tower. After a\u00a0tour through all that, top of the tower rewards visitors with a spectacular view of the valley at the foot of the High Tatras. Courtyard behind the first wall used to be a\u00a0safe place for locals or the army in the past. Now it\u00b4s a nice spot for attractions and events. You will also find a\u00a0cave carved to the rock.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"SK\">In 18th<span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span>century the aristocracy started to prefer more convenient mansions in surrounding villages. So when the castle <strong>burnt down in 1780<\/strong>, no one bothered to rebuild the <strong><span>ruins\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>until 1970, when archaeologists and conservationists started its remarkable <strong>reconstruction<\/strong> to the present state. They also recently discovered that the original tower was destroyed by a\u00a0crack of the underlying rock in 13th<span size=\"2\" style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span>century.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0more detailed dive into beauties of the landscape is offered by a\u00a010 km long nature trail from cold-water geyser <a href=\"https:\/\/sk.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Siv%C3%A1_Brada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>Siv\u00e1 Brada<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/a>through <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spi%C5%A1sk%C3%A1_Kapitula\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Spi\u0161sk\u00e1 Kapitula<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a><\/em>(medieval fortified complex, \u201eSlovak Vatican\u201c, residence of archbishop with cathedral), then through Spi\u0161 castle to <em>Dreven\u00edk<\/em> (cliffs on the other side of the castle hill).<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;
